Procedures Toward Good Intercourse Beyond the Binary

Gender is a spectrum, meaning that between and outside the constructs of male and female, there is a range that is entire of identities. We usually speak of “transgender” and “cisgender” identities: “cisgender” indicating that one’s gender fits the sex they certainly were assigned at birth, and “transgender” indicating that one’s sex will not. But, we nevertheless usually only recognize trans women and trans males, failing to acknowledge that this too improperly perpetuates the “binary”.

All too often, also conversations about trans identities fall under “gender essentialism” – that is, the myth there are only gents and ladies, and they are two distinct and fixed >: for trans or cis women to occur validly as “women,” they have to perform “womanhood” (putting on pink, loving infants, caring about the look of them, etc.), as well as for trans or cis men to occur validly as “men,” they need to perform “manhood” (loving activities, shunning femininity, etc.). While you could have noticed, gender essentialism is terribly sexist and will not mirror the countless realities of this human being experience, also for cisgender individuals.
